The second event of the year was in held again in Lyons, Colorado on June 12th, 1999. A big doggone thank you to Kurt, Pete and all the Parks and Recreation staff who worked hard putting this event together, they made everyone feel welcome and right at home in Disc Dog Town, USA. Thirty competitors and over five hundred spectators came out to watch the fur fly on the beautiful Colorado late spring day that started out with partly cloudy skies with little wind. Almost too perfect as we would find out by the start of the last event. In striving to keep this competition innovative, we added a new element to the Obstacle Course, the possibility of incurring penalty points in the Pro division. If the trainer did not attempt to complete the obstacle and the dog missed the disc, they would receive a negative point. With these new rules, we had impressive results in the Pro division with Tony Kelso & Bernie and John Vincent & Drifter scoring twelve points, followed by Marie Earle & Bo and Joe Houlahan & Baleu scoring eleven points. Not under the same rules, but dramatic just the same, amateur Suzanne Real & Jesse excelled in the Obstacle Course with an amazing twelve points, beating her best score from last year (2 rounds) by 5 points.Pro Chris Sexton & Laika had an outstanding performance in the distance event with a spectacular catch at 82 yards, resulting in a FDDO record. As the Pro division took the field for the last event, Freestyle, so did the wind and rain, creating extreme conditions. Because there was no lightning in the vicinity, the competition continued, amid the sometimes-torrential downpour and wind gusts. Christy Goodman pulled off a solid routine and received 33 points, which was the best freestyle performance of the day, but a complete melt down in the OC kept her from placing in the top three. Another big doggone thank you to our head judge, Glen Medford, who did a great job calling the shots, our other judges from the Town Of Lyons, our great sponsors, and all the competitors.
